MONROVIA, Liberia — The legal team representing former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has filed a fresh application for compassionate leave before Criminal Court “C,” seeking relief for the former Vice President as she remains detained at the Monrovia Central Prison.
The latest application follows a decision by Monrovia City Court Magistrate Ben Barcon, who denied an earlier request for compassionate leave after Howard-Taylor appeared in court for prosecution and was subsequently remanded at the Monrovia Central Prison.
According to judicial sources, the new application has prompted Criminal Court “C” Judge Ousman Feika to assign the matter for hearing on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.
Judge Feika is also expected to issue a ruling on the application on the same day. However, it remains uncertain whether the court will grant or deny the former Vice President’s request.
The development comes just ahead of proceedings concerning Howard-Taylor’s motion for preliminary examination before the Monrovia City Court, scheduled for Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Temple of Justice.
Howard-Taylor was arrested on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while reportedly en route to Ghana to attend a women’s conference.
She spent one night in police custody before being charged and subsequently transferred to the Monrovia Central Prison.
The former Vice President faces multiple charges, including drug trafficking, money laundering, and the importation of controlled and unlicensed drugs, among other offenses.
The court’s decision on the compassionate leave request is now being closely watched as the legal proceedings against the former Vice President continue.
