Liberian international defender Philip Tarnue opened his scoring account for Minnesota United FC 2 (MNUFC2), finding the back of the net in a hard-fought 1–1 draw against North Texas SC in an entertaining MLS NEXT Pro encounter.

Tarnue delivered a memorable individual performance, putting MNUFC2 ahead in the 27th minute with a powerful finish that gave the opposing goalkeeper little chance.

The goal marked an important milestone for the Liberian defender, who demonstrated his attacking threat from the back while helping his side establish an early advantage.

MNUFC2, buoyed by Tarnue’s opener, attempted to protect their lead and secure maximum points. However, North Texas SC refused to surrender and continued to press for an equalizer.

Their persistence eventually paid off as they found a way back into the contest, bringing the match level at 1–1 and sending the game to a penalty shootout to determine the winner of the additional point.

The shootout proved heartbreaking for Tarnue and his teammates.

North Texas SC held their nerve from the penalty spot, edging MNUFC2 5–4 to claim the extra point.

Despite the disappointing conclusion, Tarnue can take considerable encouragement from the performance.

His first goal for MNUFC2 not only helped his team secure a point from regulation play but also highlighted the defender’s ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch.

For the Liberian footballer, the goal represents another significant step in his development and continued adaptation to the competitive environment of MLS NEXT Pro.

Tarnue will now look to build on the landmark moment as MNUFC2 continue their campaign, with the Liberian defender expected to remain an important figure in the team’s defensive setup.

While the penalty shootout denied MNUFC2 a full reward, Tarnue’s first goal provides a personal highlight from the encounter and further strengthens the growing presence of Liberian players in the United States professional football system.
