MONROVIA, Liberia-United Nations Resident Coordinator in Liberia, Christine N. Umutoni, has called on Liberians across all 15 counties to strengthen national unity, sustain peace, and work collectively toward a more inclusive and prosperous future as the country prepares to celebrate the 81st anniversary of the United Nations.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Madam Umutoni announced that Liberia’s official UN Day celebration will take place on Monday, October 26, 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia.
Observed globally on October 24, UN Day commemorates the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945 and reflects the international community’s commitment to peace, human rights, and international cooperation. Liberia’s official celebration has been scheduled for Monday, as the anniversary falls on a weekend this year.
For the first time, the celebration will be hosted on the grounds of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscoring the longstanding partnership between Liberia and the United Nations in advancing peace, development, and the well-being of the Liberian people.
This year’s commemoration also comes at a significant moment in Liberia’s history, as the country takes up its seat as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Madam Umutoni described Liberia’s election as a source of national pride and an opportunity for the country to contribute to international peace and security, building on its own journey from conflict toward peacebuilding and democratic development.
Beyond celebrating the achievements of the United Nations and its partnership with Liberia, the event will place young people at the center of discussions about the country’s future under the theme, “The Liberia We Want by 2030.”
Madam Umutoni emphasized that sustaining peace remains essential to realizing young people’s aspirations, including greater access to employment, entrepreneurship, and opportunities for improved livelihoods. She noted that many young Liberians have grown up without direct memories of the country’s civil conflicts, making it imperative to preserve the peace and create conditions for future generations to thrive.
She stressed that achieving Liberia’s development ambitions requires collective action and shared responsibility among government institutions, civil society organizations, women, young people, the media, and other partners.
As Liberia marks this important milestone, the Resident Coordinator called on citizens throughout the country to recommit to dialogue, unity, and peaceful coexistence, emphasizing that sustainable development depends on the active participation of all sectors of society.
The 81st UN Day celebration will provide an opportunity to reflect on Liberia’s progress, recognize the enduring partnership between the Government and the United Nations, and renew the collective commitment to building a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous Liberia by 2030.
